From Pantry to Pendant: The "Upcycled Magic" of My Handcrafted Paper Beads
Have you ever looked at a frozen pizza box or a cereal container and seen a pair of earrings? Most people see recycling; I see a brand-new palette of colors and textures waiting to be rolled into something beautiful.
At Funkii Hemp Designs, my mission has always been about combining quality craftsmanship with a deep respect for our environment. Whether I’m set up at the Badlands Community Facility or prepping for the summer markets at the Brick parking lot here in Drumheller, one of the questions I get asked most is: "What is that bead actually made of?"
The answer might be sitting in your freezer or pantry right now!
The Secret Life of Cereal and Cookie Boxes
While magazines and vintage calendars make for beautiful, delicate beads, there is something truly special about "heavy" cardstock like cereal, cookie, and cracker boxes.
These materials are the unsung heroes of my jewelry bench. Because the cardboard is thicker and more fibrous, it creates a "chunky," substantial bead that has a wonderful weight to it. When I cut those iconic bright blue or sunset-orange graphics into long, tapered strips and roll them tight, they transform into one-of-a-kind patterns that you won’t find anywhere else.
Why Frozen Pizza Boxes? (Yes, Really!)
I know what you’re thinking—pizza boxes? Don't worry, I’m talking about frozen pizza boxes! Unlike the ones from the delivery shop, these boxes are clean, dry, and have fantastic, high-gloss graphics.
The cardboard used for frozen food is designed to be sturdy, which makes for incredibly durable beads. Once they are rolled and meticulously glazed to a rock-hard finish, they become so tough that people often mistake them for polished stone or wood. It’s a bit of "upcycled magic" that keeps these materials out of our local landfills and turns them into wearable art.
Visit Me This Season!
There is nothing I love more than showing off these transformations in person. You can see the shine and feel the texture of these "pantry-to-pendant" creations at my upcoming local stops:
* Summer Market Season: Catch me starting in June at the Brick parking lot.
* Canada Day Market: I’ll be at the Drumheller Memorial Arena on July 1st starting at 11:00 AM.
Next time you finish that frozen pizza or fold up a box of cookies, take a second look at the colors. You might just see your next favorite piece of jewelry!
