How to Clean and Store Your Hemp Jewellery.

Proper care is the secret to making sure your favorite hemp pieces stay durable and look great for years. Since hemp is a natural, absorbent fiber, it handles wear differently than metal jewelry.

Here is a simple guide on how to keep your hemp jewelry in top shape.

1. Cleaning Your Hemp Jewelry

Because hemp is a natural plant fiber, you want to avoid harsh chemicals or heavy soaking, which can weaken the strands over time.

 * Spot Cleaning: For everyday dirt, use a soft cloth dampened with lukewarm water and a tiny drop of mild, clear dish soap. Gently pat the area—don't scrub, as this can cause the hemp to fray or become "fuzzy."

 * Deep Cleaning: If the piece is heavily soiled, dip it briefly in lukewarm soapy water. Use your fingers to gently work out the dirt.

 * Rinsing: Rinse quickly under cool running water. Avoid leaving the jewelry submerged for long periods, as water can cause the fibers to swell and then shrink or stiffen as they dry.

 * Drying: This is the most important step! Lay the piece flat on a clean, dry towel. Never put hemp in the dryer or use a hairdryer, as high heat can make the fibers brittle. Let it air dry completely in a shaded area; direct sunlight during the drying process can sometimes fade the natural colors.

2. Best Practices for Longevity

Hemp is incredibly strong, but it has a few "natural enemies":

 * The "Dry First" Rule: Always put your jewelry on after you have applied lotions, perfumes, or hairspray. The oils and chemicals in these products can get trapped in the weave and cause discoloration.

 * Water Exposure: While a little rain won't hurt, try to remove your hemp necklaces or bracelets before swimming or showering. Chlorine and salt water are particularly tough on natural fibers and can cause them to break down prematurely.

3. Storage Tips

How you store your jewelry when you aren't wearing it can prevent tangles and preserve the shape.

 * Keep it Flat or Hanging: Store necklaces and bracelets flat in a jewelry drawer or hanging on a hook. This prevents the hemp from developing "kinks" or permanent bends in the cord.

 * Avoid Humidity: Store your pieces in a cool, dry place. Because hemp is an organic material, keeping it in a high-humidity environment (like a bathroom) for long periods isn't ideal.

 * Separate Your Pieces: If your jewelry has beads or a button clasp, storing it in a small cloth bag can prevent it from snagging on other items.
